Session 3: "After Service Duties"

As people begin to file out, stand next to the hymn bookrack and collect hymnals and used bulletins. Be sure to greet people and smile. Your hospitality continues until the end. Make a pile of the used bulletins and place them in the basket. We practice recycling.

After everyone has exited the nave, go through the area looking for discarded bulletins and other trash. If you find a purse or other personal items, watch them for 10 or 15 minutes. If the owner does not return, collect them and give them to the pastor to be secured in the office. Make a note of what you found and who you gave it to. Do not go through the purse or personal items.

Special Post 11:00 Service Duties

After the 11:00 service ushers have four primary responsibilities that are important to the saving money for the church and safely securing the building.

  1. soundboard
Turn off the sound system. This is in the reverse order for turning on the system. The sound system cabinet is located on the southwest side of the nave by the windows. Open the cabinet top and find the two knobs for "U" or "topside". Move these knobs to the zero position. Then find the power switches to the right of the sound board and turn them off. Then close the lid.

  2. light switches
  3. Turn off the Sanctuary lights: These switches are found on the wall to the right of the nave doors. Turn them to the off position. You need to also turn the dimmer switches to the left until they click off. This also includes a small black knob that is difficult to twist.

  4. light switch
    Turn off Building Lights:
    1. North Narthex Lights: located next to the North Narthex Doors
    2. South Narthex Lights: located next to the South Narthex Doors
    3. Lights in Ministry Center: Check all rooms including bathrooms
    4. Lights in Library/Chapel: These are located at the south entrance, push the "9" button
    5. Lights in the Narthex, kitchen and narthex bathrooms.

  5. panic bar being unlocked
Lock and Secure Outside Doors:To lock panic bars.Take the allen key from inside the door frame and put inside hole in panic bar. Turn to the left. The panic bar should pop out. Do this with all outside doors:

    1. North Narthex Doors
    2. South Narthex Doors
    3. Northwest Ministry Center Doors
    4. Southwest Ministry Center Doors

If people still remain in building, ask them to turn off the lights before they leave. If they wish to keep a door unlocked, teach them how to lock the door. It is important that you leave feeling confident that the building will be secure.
