Ushering for Holy Communion

Ushering for Holy Communion follows the same pattern as collecting the offering. Ushers move the people forward beginning with the first row and moving toward the rear. Theoretically, those who choose to receive communion can go forward at anytime and from any place, however, we find that ushers are important for gentle guidance.

Check with cantor about when the choir will commune. Usually, the choir will commune first, so that they may help with singing. If the choir does not commune first, or are not in attendance, the ushers follow the communion assistants forward during the “Lamb of God”. Begin to usher people during the singing or playing of music following the presider’s invitation to communion. Then usher people forward with a nod to the first row of persons indicating that they may move forward to the rail.

Special Needs:

Sometimes we have physically challenged people who desire to have communion brought to them. Politely asked them if they would like communion brought to them. If they say yes, notify the pastor or assisting minister. It would also be helpful if you would escort the presiding minister and assisting minister to the communicant.

At the conclusion of everyone communing, please join the last table. After receiving communion, return to the back of the nave and wait for the post-communion prayer to be said. After its conclusion, open the doors to the central narthex.
