Introduction to Ushering Session 1 "Before Service Duties" Session 2 "During Service Duties" Session 3 "After Service Duties" "What do I do Now?

During Service Duties

We invite the congregation to enter the nave while the musicians are preparing for worship. The doors are closed during that time not to keep people out, but for better acoustics during the choral warm-up. Please open one door for people to enter the nave, and then close it until the bell rings, signaling the start of worship. If choir is not rehearsing, you can open both doors sooner.

usher greeting Greeting Worshippers

Greet everyone, children included, with a smile and a hymnal and bulletin. Ask children if they would like a children's bulletin. (these are located on the table). If you someone seems to be visiting, and, if you have time, welcome them and introduce yourself with just your first name. Do not ask them for their name. We respect those attending and it is perfectly fine if they want to remain anonymous.

If you notice that the crowd will be large, as at festival services, you may want to ask couples to share a hymnal.

Late Arrivals

Try to reserve the back chairs next to the door for those who come. If they arrive during special music, ask them if they would mind entering the nave through one of the hallway doors, vesting sacristy or wait until the selection is over. Try to help them find their place in bulletin.

Closing the doors

The doors to the nave are closed after the procession has entered the nave. They remain closed during the service.

usher seats Ushers' Seats During the Service

You may be seated in the back on chairs reserved for you. During this time, you can be available to help families with babies or any other concern that might arise.

Count the number of worshippers.

During the reading of the lessons is a good time to count the number of worshippers. You can do this by either one person taking this responsibility or by dividing up the nave. Please do this from the back hall door by the kitchen and by the nave door to the vesting sacristy. Be sure to count the worship leaders, choir and the children and nursery attendants in the nursery.
