You should arrive at least 20 minutes before the service begins. If you are scheduled for the 8:00 service you should strive to be there 30 minutes before hand.

Pre-8:00 Service Duties

  1. Check to see if all doors have been opened. Many times the cantor or the pastor will have these doors open, but there can be times when this might not happen. To unlock these doors, you must insert the allen key taken from the hook inside the door jam on the right side. Place the key in the hole on the panic bar while pressing the bar in. Turn the key to the right and the panic bar should hold in place. Do this for both panic bars on each door.

The doors that need to stay locked are:

    1. Library/Chapel doors
    2. Northeast doors by the sacristy

  3. Check to see if all lights have been turned on. Normally this is done by the Cantor or Pastor, but check to see if they are all on. Special note- During the season of Advent and Lent, all the lights are often not on prior to the service, allowing for a more meditative environment.

Turn all lights on. Include also the dimmer switches and turn them all the way to the right. There is also a small black dimmer knob that can also be turned to the right (it may be difficult to hold and turn)

  4. Check to see if the sound system is turned on. The sound system is located in the cabinet on the southwest side of the nave. Lift the lid. On the right you will see two power switches. Turn them both on first. Then adjust two knobs on the soundboard to "U". They are labeled "topside". Close the lid. If during the service, the sound is too low, you can adjust the pulpit, pastor and assisting minister by moving their respective knobs higher.

Both Service Duties

  1. Check Hymn Board: Check to see if hymn numbers correspond with the hymns in the bulletin. This is a job done in partnership with the altar guild. The small ladder and the plastic box storing the hymn board numbers are in the counting room.

  2. Check with the cantor to hear if there are any special instructions for the service. Sometimes the cantor will have these instructions typed out and on one of the tables in the central narthex

  3. Prepare Bulletins and Hymnals: The hymn carts can be found in the vesting sacristy. The bulletins can be found on the table in central narthex. They are organized in a basket. There are two bulletins in the basket. One for the 8:00 and 11:00 service and one for the 9:30 service. Be sure to select the correct bulletin. You will find the word contemporary on the 9:30 service. This hymnal is never used for the 8:00 and 11:00 services. After you have located the correct bulletin, read on the first page to find out which hymnal we will be using. We have three hymnals:
    • Lutheran Book of Worship: Color Green
    • With One Voice: Color Blue
    • Renewing Worship: Color Rainbow

  4. Lutheran Book of Worship With One Voice Renewing Worship Book

Go to the vesting sacristy and retrieve the appropriate hymn book cart with the correct hymnal. Position the hymn cart by the nave door and begin putting one bulletin inside one hymnal. Fill up at least one row of hymnals.Put the bulletin just inside the front cover.

  5. Check to see if the hymn numbers on the hymn boards correspond to the numbers in the bulletins. The altar guild will post these numbers, but we want to double check the numbers to avoid confusion. If they are incorrect notify the cantor or someone from the altar guild.

  6. Spot check the nave for any discarded bulletins or litter. Also straighten any chairs that seem out of order.

  7. Finally check to see if the offering plates are in place in the narthex.

  8. Services like Christmas, Easter, baptism or confirmation traditionally create a large attendance. You therefore should be prepared for additional seating. You may have to assist people in open seats or ask people to move to the outer edges of the row to make places for more people. Additional chairs can be added from the fellowship hall and set up in the central narthex.
