Worship and Building Terms

Being familiar with building and worship terms is very helpful in communicating between cantor, pastor and worship leaders. In addition, by learning these terms, one can appreciate the meaning of our church building and its intended purpose.

central narthex Central Narthex (sometimes referred to as "narthex")

The entrance area outside of the doors to the nave and sanctuary where people gather before and after service. This is also where hymnals and bulletins are handed out, offering plates and communion elements are kept for the service.

south narthex South Narthex

The area lies to the right of the nave and sanctuary as you face the doors. This area has a small gathering area with couches and a coffee table. This part of the narthex leads to the choir room. It also has the place where the worship attendance is written down- the folder on the guest book podium.

The area directly area around the altar. Normally this is where the processional cross is placed. Many people will refer to the nave, chancel and the sanctuary as simply, "sanctuary".

The space located in front of the altar area. A person might say that is the "front of the sanctuary". We don't use this term often because our chancel is not well defined.

Nave

The area where people sit and stand for worship. We refrain from using the term "auditorium."

vesting sacristy Vesting Sacristy

These are the candles that we use on the altar to symbolize the light of Christ in the world. Often two acolytes will each carry one of these as part of the procession.

The podium on which the Word of God is read and preached.

Credence Table

The table stands to the left of the organ console. We place the bread, wine and the collected offering on it.
